It’s no secret: there are people in power right now who would prefer to live in a country in which most of us don’t get to cast a vote. They don’t believe we should be a democracy, and while they claim to love America, they have nothing but contempt for the American people and don’t want us to make our own decisions about our nation.

Even worse, those same people have openly expressed their willingness to sabotage the upcoming election to achieve their desired goals.  The Trump administration is suggesting that President Trump might declare a bogus national emergency and place armed ICE agents at polling stations, along with large-scale voter suppression and purging of voter rolls.

The midterm elections are crucial, and we must DEFEND THE BALLOT BOX.

This year Democratic candidates will be facing an unprecedented threat of election interference as they fight to regain control of Congress, and that is why we would love to see you at the Neuberger Gala, our biggest fundraiser of the year.  The money we make at Neuberger will be spent on our Neighborhood Leader Program and financing local candidate campaigns. You can support your Democratic Party, all while having a great time socializing with fellow Democrats, hearing inspiring speeches from candidates and electeds, and bidding on amazing raffle baskets and auction prizes.  It’s a win-win!

So please, purchase your ticket for the Neuberger Gala for Saturday, October 17th held at the Tualatin Country Club.  See you in October!

Neuberger Gala Fundraiser

Secretary of State Tobias Read, Keynote Speaker at the 43rd annual Neuberger Gala.

Keynote Speaker: Tobias Read

Secretary of State Tobias Read will discuss the nuts-and-bolts of the upcoming mid-term elections. While “nuts and bolts” may seem a bit tedious under normal circumstances; what we face in November is not normal. The are forces, very determined and persistent, that seek to throw a wrench in the works and subvert our voice. We cannot let that happen. Secretary Read will explain how votes are received and counted in Oregon, possible threats to the process of collecting and tabulating ballots, and what he and other secretaries of state are doing to ensure a fair and free election. Perhaps most important all, he will provide ideas on how all of us together can defend the ballot box.

Tobias Read is Oregon’s 30th secretary of state. Born in Montana and raised in Idaho, he attended Willamette University then the University of Washington for his master’s degree. Secretary Read worked at the U.S. Treasury and Nike, Inc. prior to his election as state representative in 2007 and state treasurer in 2017.

Tobias helped lead the charge to fund full-day kindergarten across Oregon, created and later implemented the Oregon Retirement Savings Program—now known as OregonSaves—which serves more than 130,000 Oregonians, and protected the Elliott State Forest by making it one of the largest research forests and carbon reserves in North America.

As Secretary of State, Tobias’ first priority is to hold the State of Oregon accountable for delivering on its promises, managing tax dollars wisely, and running secure, fair elections.

Music

This year Neuberger presents The Music Zone. We have added a new element to our cocktail hour beginning at 5:30—a mini-concert. In addition to bidding for silent auction items, purchasing raffle tickets, and selecting your surprise bottle of wine at the Wall of Wine, you can sit in the Music Zone and enjoy the soul, jazz and blues of Swingmasters.

Photo Contest

October 17th is a day packed ways to resist the dictatorship of the Trump administration as it works overtime on subverting the vote. In addition to attending the Neuberger gala, there is a No Kings day of protest and rallies planned. But you don’t need to choose between the two! You can do both! Hit one of the No Kings events early in the day, then head over to the Neuberger gala. Both are focusing on the vote, perhaps the most crucial issue at this point. If you attend one of the No Kings protests, take photos and videos, send them to us at volunteer@washcodems.org, and they will be featured at the gala in a slide show. There is prize for the best photos! Be sure to send your photos and videos by 3:00.

Portugal Awaits!

5 nights/2 guests

Value $2,900/Start Bid $1,990

Porto is called “The Unvanquished City.” It earned the nickname because the Portuguese held out a year-long siege in the 19th century Liberal Wars. We are the beneficiaries of their resistance because the enduring beauty, winding cobblestone streets, colorful riverside facades, azulejo-tiled architecture, scenic vineyard valleys, and vibrant culinary scene are still present for us to enjoy. Set along the Douro River, it is the birthplace of world-renowned Port wine. You will spend 5 nights in a stylish boutique hotel in the heart of Porto. Immerse yourself in the city’s rich wine heritage with a guided 3-hour walking tour, featuring tastings of Porto’s renowned Port wines and strolls through its historic neighborhoods. If you’d like to experience Portugal without the crowds, the north is your best bet. Porto is within a stone’s throw of Vila do Conde, which features a medieval aqueduct, and it is an hour from Braga, one of Portugal’s oldest cities that combines Roman and early Christian influences, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary. Don’t miss Matosinhos, a coastal city known for its sandy beaches, surf schools, and fantastic seafood restaurants, or Aveiro, often called the “Venice of Portugal” due its multihued boats, canals, and Art Nouveau architecture.

A must for history lovers and gun enthusiasts. Men armed with flintlock pistols were called “fusiliers.”
