Break Time Is Over!

by Clayton Callahan, Washington County Democrats Communications Committee Member

Did everybody have a good summer? I sure did. Took some time off, re-connected with some old friends, and I even lost a little weight riding my bicycle. But right now, it’s time to get back to work because, people, the clock is ticking.

Interestingly, every time I look at the news lately, it seems like the Democrats are a shoe-in to sweep the midterms like gangbusters. Kind of gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling, right? After all, the polls just seem to get bluer and bluer every day, and it looks like this could at long last be the end of MAGA.

Yeah, right… just like we were going to crush Trump and his fascist movement back in 2016 and 2024.

Face it, those years were absolute disasters not only for Democrats, but for our nation as a whole. And it will surely be DECADES before even the most competent of Americans can set this MAGA mess to right. And in each of those past election years, I recall hearing the Sirens’ sweet song of pollsters telling us, “Don’t worry, the libs have got this one in the bag.”

Well, color me skeptical, but I’m not trusting my future to anything viewed through rose colored glasses anymore.

Instead, I’m trusting the only thing that has proven effective over time. And that thing is hard work!

That’s right, y’all, it’s time to roll up sleeves and put in some long hours. Because sure as shooting, the Republicans already got their hands plenty dirty trying everything in their power to thwart our democracy and skew our elections. And unless good folk like you and me stand up, those Guardians of Pedophiles are going to win it again.

Now, let me ask:  have you ever volunteered at a phone bank? How about writing postcards on behalf of Democratic candidates? Can you chip in a couple of bucks to a Democratic race or two? Or how about putting up a few campaign signs in your front yard, for gosh sake? The good news is, there are likely hundreds of things you can do that can tip the balance in freedom’s favor this autumn. So, get out there friends, put your shoulders to the wheel and give Democracy a push. Because America has always been and will always be a do-it-yourself job, and it’s we the people who need to show up for work.

And, by the way, Oregon’s voting for the 2026 midterm elections will begin on October 19, 2026.
