Washington County Democrats Announce Passed Resolution Regarding Senate Democratic Leadership Fund Usage

On June 24th, Washington County Democrats met for the June Central Committee Meeting (“CC”) and passed a resolution regarding the Senate Democratic Leadership Fund.

The Democratic Party of Washington County has passed a resolution at our June Central Committee meeting regarding funds donated during a Democratic primary by the Oregon Senate Democratic Leadership Fund. The Fund (SDLF) is the official campaign arm and political action committee (PAC) for the Oregon Senate Democratic caucus. The fund is generally meant to maintain and expand the Democratic majority in the Oregon State Senate, and works to recruit, train, and fund Democratic candidates across the state. As a unique PAC, it is not part of the official channels of the Democratic Party. This means that no local county parties or the Democratic Party of Oregon use these funds, or have any say in how they are spent.

In the May primary this year, this fund was used to donate funds in a Democratic primary. ORESTAR records show that this has not been the general use of this fund. In fact it has been just shy of 20 years since this fund was last used for a primary.

We serve Washington County as the local Democratic Party, and the intention of this resolution is about empowering Democratic candidates across Oregon to defeat Republicans, and gain a supermajority. The Membership of our party is hopeful that the focus of this fund moving forward will be to defeat Republicans. It was a surprise to us to see so much money funneled towards a primary race in a safe district, when there are so many regions in Oregon where we need to fight to win seats.

As the local party we often interact with our State Senators, and have great respect for the work they do. This challenging resolution is meant to communicate with a unified voice to our legislative body, expressing our request that they will hear us for future primaries.
