BACKGROUND:
Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in 1973 to honor the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which secured women’s suffrage. The fight for gender equality began over 175 years ago at the Seneca Falls Convention (1848) and has continued through countless milestones and challenges.

After nearly five decades of federally protected abortion rights, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022 which returned the power to regulate reproductive health to individual states. The decision has sparked widespread confusion, fear, and renewed legislative battles over women’s constitutional protections. Under the current federal administration, there are ongoing threats to women’s constitutional rights including bills such as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act and the Life at Conception Act.

This event underscores the importance of supporting equitable legislation, women‑inclusive community organizations, and mutual solidarity.
