Washington County Democrats Pass Resolution Condemning Acts of Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia

The words From The Chair on a dark background with an ornamental border

At our Central Committee Meeting on Wednesday, November 15th, the Washington County Democrats passed a resolution making clear that we stand against acts of anti-Semitic or Islamophobic hate in our local community.  We have watched with growing worry and sadness as the number of incidents related to Islamophobia and anti-Semitism has increased greatly in our county and state.

Here are some thoughts from our party Chair, Martita Meier, about the resolution:

When there is war and turmoil anywhere in the world, there are many in our community who feel that pain here at home. The Washington County Democrats believe it is important to show local support to those community members who are experiencing Islamophobia or anti-Semitism because of the war going on today in the Middle East.

Locally, we can make a difference. We can ask that our electeds and those who serve the public do all they can to take care of our communities suffering from hate and unrest.

We want to make sure that all Jewish people and all Muslim people feel safe and welcome here in Washington County. It should not be the burden of these communities to be harassed because of what goes on on the other side of the world. So many already suffer knowing that they have friends and family abroad who are directly affected by these tragic events.

As Democrats we are here to welcome you, and we work to assure you are safe and respected.

Know that you are always welcome here with us.

Sincerely,

Martita Meier, Washington County Democrats Chair

The text of the resolution is as follows:

The Washington County Democrats are seeing an increase in anti-Semitic and Islamophobic behavior and violence here in Washington County and throughout Oregon, and we condemn any and all forms of hate directed to these two communities.

Washington County Democrats are dedicated to hearing and valuing people and their diverse backgrounds, and we unequivocally condemn all forms of hatred against our Muslim and Jewish community members.

We also reaffirm the WashCoDems Platform, Article 1, Plank 1 that states, “We believe all identifiable groups, including minority communities, as well as communities identified with gender and sexual identities, must be guaranteed full human rights….” and be treated with respect.

The Washington County Democrats ask all of our local electeds to make a concerted effort to ensure that all Washington County citizens feel safe in their communities.
