February 3rd, 2022

What is the purpose of school and how do we achieve that? Please join us as we reflect on this topic as part of our Build Back Better series.

6:30 social time 7:00 PM meeting

At our East Washington County Dems meeting on February 3, Laurie Wimmer will help us reflect on the K-12 education system in Oregon, where it has been and where it should go. Laurie has just retired from her role for the last 26 years as a government relations consultant and lobbyist with Oregon Education Association, and has been at the heart of how we shape schools through the legislative process. We will also be joined by Dr. Shaheen Munir-McHill who is a board member of Decoding Dyslexia Oregon, an assistant professor of practice at Portland State University and the coordinator of the PSU Special Education K-12 license and endorsement programs. She will speak on the intersection of equity and early literacy and the role of teacher preparation in moving our schools forward. How can we narrow the gap between groups of students in their ability to read?

During this pandemic, we can see the problems schools are experiencing. But this is not a new problem. Beset by years of inadequate funding, our K-12 schools have worked hard to educate our children. The current disruption in this system opens doors for us to think outside the box. How can we best educate all of our children to be ready for their role as citizens, parents, workers, and fulfilled individuals in the 21st century? Ben Bowman and Chelsea King, chairs of Tigard-Tualatin and West Linn-Wilsonville School Districts and both candidates for the legislature will join us as discussants as we think about these ideas.

As always, all are welcome to join us on Zoom for learning, caring conversation, and community. You can reach out to EWCDems@gmail.com with any questions or comments. We will meet at 6:30 for those who wish a social time, with the program beginning at 7 pm.
