WashCo Dems Call to Action: Gender Equity in WashCo Dems’ Delegate Elections
We are asking Washington County Democrats to share thoughts, ideas, and recommendations on the delegate election rules that are inclusive and fair, especially with respect to gender equity.
During the April 2019 Central Committee Meeting, members approved the formation of a Special Committee made up of 5 members to review the delegate election process for bi-annual Organization Meetings (the meeting where we elect Central Committee Officers and Delegates to the State Party Central Committee and Congressional District 1 Central Committee). The 5 members were appointed by the Chair of the county Party to evaluate what happened during the 2018 Organization meeting and how to move forward by conducting delegate elections with rules that are inclusive and fair, especially with respect to gender equity.
The main concern voiced over the current procedure (Special Rule of Order #4) is that while it recognizes a non-binary gender, there is a minimum number of male gender and female gender delegates but no minimum number of non-binary gender delegates. This is similar to when women were not allowed to vote (unless they could prove they were a man).
Now we need your ideas and opinions, your feedback matters to us!
