WashCo Dems Call to Action: Let Senators Run!
Senator Merkley is the only Senator with the vision, integrity and guts to endorse Bernie Sanders. We cannot lose a person like this because of Oregon’s antiquated statute. Senator Merkley will announce his decision whether or not to run at the end of March. We need to make it easier for him to say yes.
– Hank McCurdy, Portland, OR
Oregon is among a handful of states with resign-to-run statutes. These laws prohibit a person holding a paid political office from running for another paid office. There are valid arguments for such laws, for instance, that running for another office will negatively affect the candidate’s performance in the current office. Another is that a candidate could use public resources of the current office to campaign for the second office.
ALL THESE ARGUMENTS FAIL WHEN THE CURRENT OFFICE HELD IS THAT OF THE US SENATE AND THE OFFICE SOUGHT IS THE PRESIDENCY OF THE USA BECAUSE THE ISSUES THAT A US SENATOR DEALS WITH ARE VIRTUALLY THE SAME AS THE US PRESIDENT DOES.
The influence accruing to a Senator who wins the Presidency benefits his/her home state. Even an unsuccessful presidential bid will most likely raise that Senator’s stature among other national politicians increasing her/his ability to represent the home state’s interests.
Such laws handicap candidates of modest means who have devoted years to public service regardless of the candidate’s merit. They help perpetuate a major problem in American politics: the influence of big money. They are unpatriotic, unconstitutional and, harmful to the state that has such a law.
Most Presidential runs fail. A US Senator from a resign-to-run state who fails in a Presidential bid leaves her/his state without the benefits of the seniority the Senator has built in the national legislature, and deprives their state of their choice for Senator.
Resign-to-run laws deter qualified Senators from running for the Presidency. They infringe on the Senator’s 1st Amendment rights and those of her/his supporters. They are unpatriotic.
Here is supporting documentation:
- Lobby the state Legislature, particularly your own state Representative and state Senator
- Create a website with an online petition
- Speak out on social media
- Write a Letter to the Editor
- From now until the end of March 2019 which is when Senator Merkley will announce whether he will run
Not sure what to say?
Let people know your Senator should not have to abdicate their responsibilities to run for President.
